Mirror Self Portrait Advertisement
Identify sources of visual culture in society and the media and discuss how the messages they convey affect personal and consumer choices. Include in an item (shampoo, toys, perfume, cologne, energy drinks, etc.) they are attempting to sell into their drawing by finding an image of it to draw. Draw a self-portrait with graphite pencils of their face and shoulders that conveys an emotion (happy, angry, sad, uncaring, exhilarated, sensual) that benefits or puts down a product they are advertising for. The work must show an understanding of contrast, volumetric forms of the body and item, and basic composition structure. Write how their choice of expression conveys whether they wanted to promote or put down the item they chose to incorporate.
Sphinx Modeling
The student will create a 6-12” statue showing a symbolic representation of him or herself. Students will understand how culture and society affects symbols by demonstrating current culture symbolism in creating a personal interpretation of an idea. Students will develop a visual vernacular to help articulate their own ideas and history through art by reading an images and explain the meaning on a surface and deeper level.
Roman Tunnel Book
Create a 2D environment representing a 3D environment using foreground, middle ground, and background planes to demonstrate special depth. Use layers of images to create a personal story using visual components of Ancient Roman stylized marks. Articulate their artistic decisions to defend and explain their artwork upon completion.
Animal Prints
Create a black and white print plate utilizing texture to detail an animal. Demonstrate the print process by producing a series of four successful prints. Communicate methods and process in a formal critique with focus on process and problem-solving. Learn mounting and presentation skills by framing and hanging work.

Create a volumetric shield that domes outwards. Understand ancient cultures and processes used to make shields out of steel and iron. Demonstrate motor skills through cutting out symbolic details, similar to a coat of arms.
